Programme

DUBUGNON Caprice à l’espagnole (Madrid premiere)

ELGAR Cello Concerto in E minor

MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 5 “Reformation”

Musikkollegium Winterthur makes its debut at Ibermúsica under the direction of Roberto González-Monjas, who will also be appearing in the series for the first time. To mark this special occasion, they will present a programme featuring three works of strongly contrasting character, opening with the Madrid premiere of Caprice à l’espagnole by Richard Dubugnon, a colourful piece in which the Swiss composer explores Spanish-inspired rhythms within a highly vivid orchestral language.

The programme continues with one of Edward Elgar’s most beautiful and nostalgic works: his Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, a score of great expressive intensity which, despite its cool reception at its premiere, is now regarded as one of the most important works in the cello repertoire.

The evening concludes with Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 “Reformation”, composed in 1830 to mark the 300th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation and premiered in 1832 in Berlin, with Mendelssohn himself conducting. It is a work from his youth, marked by structural strength and formal clarity, in which many of the defining features of the composer’s language are already anticipated.
