ELGAR Cello Concerto
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 6
Faithful to its commitment to the European avant-garde, the Nederlands Philharmonie opens its concert with the Spanish premiere of a new work by Dutch composer Willem Jeths, known for his timbral sophistication and his ability to evoke theatrical and lyrical atmospheres. Next, we will hear Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, one of the most beautiful works ever written for the instrument, composed after the First World War. The score is one of the most moving elegies in the repertoire, moving from the celebrated opening recitative to passages of profound introspection. To conclude, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique”, one of his final completed works, notable for breaking away from traditional structure: the second movement is an ‘asymmetrical’ waltz in 5/4 time; the third, a brilliant march; and the fourth, instead of the customary fast tempo, is an Adagio lamentoso, highly expressive and powerful, in which the music gradually fades away until it dissolves into silence.
