Energy, light, and sonic expansion unite these three works, tracing a path from contemplation of the sun to the symphonic affirmation of a fully mature voice in Northern Europe. In the HeliosOverture, Carl Nielsen depicts the sun’s journey across the Aegean Sea through an organic crescendo: the music emerges from shadow, gradually unfolds, and culminates in a radiant, almost tangible luminosity, shaped as a natural arc of ever-increasing brilliance. Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Violin Concerto, heard for the first time at Ibermúsica, explores a modern musical language of remarkable rhythmic precision, in which the soloist engages in a dialogue with an orchestra of constantly shifting textures, sustaining a continuous tension between energy and reflection. Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1 opens the door to a sound world that remains rooted in Romanticism yet already reveals the distinctly individual voice of the Finnish composer. Broadly soaring melodies and dramatic gestures coexist with an evocative sense of a Nordic landscape taking shape.
