ARRIAGA Symphony in D major
MOZART Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622
HAYDN Symphony No. 49 in F minor, Hob. I:49 “La Passione”
The Symphony in D major is one of the most remarkable works in Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga’s brief catalogue. Despite his early death at the age of nineteen, the so-called “Spanish Mozart” went down in the history of his country’s music not only as a great promise, but as one of the most outstanding composers of his generation. In this score by Arriaga, the stylistic influences of the other two protagonists of the evening’s programme are clearly evident: Mozart and Haydn. From the Salzburg genius we will hear the iconic Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, a cornerstone of the clarinet repertoire and a work deeply embedded in the collective imagination, having featured in the soundtrack of films such as Out of Africa.
To close both the concert and the Ibermúsica season, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his Constellation Orchestra will perform Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 in F minor, Hob. I:49 “La Passione”, fifteen years after its last performance in our series by the New York Philharmonic. Composed in 1768 during Haydn’s most emotionally charged period, it is considered one of his works of greatest expressive power and intensity.
