CHOPIN Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11
WILLIAMS Sea Sketches
ELGAR Enigma Variations
Maestro Jaime Martín takes the podium to lead the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in an exciting evening, featuring as guest soloist one of today’s most internationally acclaimed Spanish classical artists, pianist Martín García García. Awarded Third Prize and the Special Prize of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra for the best concerto performance at the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition, he will perform one of the most celebrated works by the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin: the Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11.
In the second half of the concert, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales will pay tribute to one of Wales’s most distinguished composers, Grace Williams. Composed in 1944 during her time in London, the suite Sea Sketches is an evocative work that transports the listener to the Welsh coastline so dearly missed by Williams. She presented the suite to fellow composer Gerald Cockshott, expressing her desire to leave the city and her longing to return home and live by the sea.
The programme concludes with a cornerstone of the British repertoire, the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar.
